Lord, what fools these Republicans be

First, if I have any loyal readers, I’m sorry for the delay in posting a new blog.  My real job has actually been busy and nearly interesting lately.

I got to go to Virginia on business and managed to get just enough spare time to visit St John’s Church in Richmond.  For those of you who do not know, this is where Patrick Henry gave his famous “Give me liberty or give me death” speech.  I stood in the room where 6 signers of the Declaration of Independence debated about whether or not to form the Virginia Militia.  After Patrick Henry’s speech, they decided to form that militia under the command of George Washington (who was also there that night).  It was the beginning of the revolution, and I was standing in the room where it all happened.  I get goose bumps just thinking about it.  Those men, in that room, changed the course of human history and they did it so that they might free their children of tyranny.  They wanted liberty and freedom from oppression.  That night they decided to fight for it.

More than 200 years later, we are going back toward oppression.  Our president and our elected officials have passed laws denying us our due process; they find new ways to invade our privacy every day and they continue to take what is rightfully ours.  They spend what we earn, they take what we create and they give no thanks.  They call press conferences and give speeches about how it’s not enough.  We need to give more and we need to be thankful for the opportunity to have our gains confiscated.  It sounds a lot like what the Virginia magistrates were concerned about just a couple centuries ago.

Rick Santorum has dropped out of the race.  If you read my blog, you know I was not a fan.  But I respect his decision to withdraw.  Spend time with that precious little girl, Rick.  Your family is more important.

Since the talk has all been about Romney being the eventual nominee.  That’s very likely true.  Republicans just can’t wait to lose in November and they are turning out in record low numbers to prove it.  I’ve talked to some Romney supporters because I’m honestly trying to understand what the hell you are all thinking.  “Romney will repeal Obammacare.”  So will my 9 year old, you’re not voting for her.  “Romney is better than Obama.”  So is my gold fish, you’re not voting for them.  “Romney was a businessman”, ok, I’ll concede that one.

But then I point to his record in Massachusetts.  It sucks.  Google it sometime.  “Well, he’s had an “awakening” since then”.  Yeah, my ex wife had one of those every time I caught her cheating too.  Guess what?  Her words did not match her deeds and one day I stopped judging people by their words and I started judging them by their deeds.  If you eliminate their words, and only compare their records, Romney is only about two steps away from Obama.  Frankly, I’m not sure which is worse, because Obama didn’t deliver on most of his words.

I also get, “Well Romney was working with a Democratic Congress in a Liberal state.”  If you use that logic, Romney would have signed Obamacare into law in 2009 if he had been president (because he would have been working with a Democratic Congress).  Let’s push that thought process forward, though.  Let’s say, my some miracle of God Himself, Romney manages to beat Obama.  Based on the low turn out in every Republican primary county he’s carried, we can conclude there will be a very low republican turn out in the November elections.  Romney might win if more cool-aid drinking Republicans than cool-aid drinking Democrats show up.  But what about the independent vote?  I got news for you; the “Anybody but Obama” mantra is not going to carry you down the ticket.  Not only is that the oldest and weakest freakin’ campaign strategy in the history of the country; but we’ve been completely desensitized to that rhetoric over the last dozen elections.  We are, most likely, going to split our vote.  I’d like to think the American people are smart enough to start thinking 3rd party, but the election of Obama and now the nomination of Romney do not give me hope.  It seems the majority are just lemmings running blindly toward the cliff.  What you’ll end up with is Romney in the White House with a Democrat controlled congress (or maybe even a split congress like we have now).  The only things passing that congress are bills restricting freedom, confiscating property, growing the size of government and growing our debt.  When you nominate Romney, you’ll either get 4 more years of Obama (most likely) or you’ll get 4 more years of Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi.

I’m also tired of people telling me that if I vote Libertarian, I’m voting for Obama.  No, I’m not.  I’m also not voting for Romney.  I’m not helping either one of them.  I refuse to put gas in the tank of ANY machine designed to destroy this country.  If you want me to vote Republican, I suggest you find someone who knows how to balance a budget and who want to actually shrink government (not just slow its growth – shrink it – now - exponentially).  If you can’t nominate that person, then you don’t deserve my vote.

Anyone who votes for a politician based on his words and not his deeds deserves to get exactly what they vote for.
